beyond within 方外, 內觀, 中國文字是一個空間不是一個時間, 法國人說聲音是活的, 寫的是死的, 剛好跟中國相反.

多少的細微念頭, 在每一分每一秒中閃過, 多少萬分的準備, 在最後關頭總會有遺漏. 然而萬分準備縱有遺漏也留有千分成果. 我願再繼續往前挑戰未知的極限.

How many subtle thoughts flashed in every minute and second

How many ten thousands' preparation, at the final moment, there's always something missing. 

However, even there is ten thousands of preparation with something missing, there is still a thousand achievements. 

I am willing to continue to challenge myself for the future unknown.

Went to this concert last night and had participated the emotional perception study. It was quite interesting experience to me. While checking each question after listen a piece of music which had given a "title" (everyone got different "title" of each same piece), I was thinking that the music seems not really infect my feeling but what I have experienced in my life. If I feel guilty or sorrow, I might hear more that kind of feeling in the music no matter what the music is presenting...


I remember there is a piece titled "anger" but I did not feel angry at all. At some point, I feel I saw my inner evil part that there is a tiny bit of happiness in hearing some uncoordinated sound... very strange but interesting feeling about seeing myself through music.

Hanslick posits that since emotion is not present in the music (objective) but is dependent on the listener’s interpretation (subjective) it cannot be the basis for an aesthetics of music. He does admit, however, that music may “awaken feelings,” but maintains that it cannot “represent” them.

錢鍾書(Qian Zhongshu, 1910-1998) 先生說: 樂無意, 故能涵一切意. Music itself does not involve any meaning, therefore Music can be inclusive. 3/13/2017

The rasa theory is mentioned in Chapter 6 of the ancient Sanskrit text Natya Shastra attributed to Bharata, but its most complete exposition in drama, songs and other performance arts is found in the works of the Kashmiri Shaivite philosopher Abhinavagupta (c. 1000 CE).According to the Rasa theory of the Natya Shastra, entertainment is a desired effect of performance arts but not the primary goal, and that the primary goal is to transport the individual in the audience into another parallel reality, full of wonder and bliss, where he experiences the essence of his own consciousness, and reflects on spiritual and moral questions.

" 永久的情緒 與 短暫的情緒 -- 短暫的情緒在永久的情緒中起起伏伏, 來來去去, 是成就永久情緒(最高情緒境界)的一波波地波浪.

Just haven't find any study about the relationships of 5 elements with 5 sounds to the 5 organs in our body. 五音, 五行, 五臟的關係似乎尚未有人深入研究, 雖然中醫已有理論. 3/28/2017

晨起隨手拿起章華英的[宋代古琴音樂研究], 翻開書看到的便是這兩首詩. 昨日於大學聽到孔子學院的演說及演奏不正是”世人不容獨反古,強以新曲求鏗鏘。” “古意墮渺茫” “世人囂囂好絲竹,撞鐘擊鼓浪謂榮。”  感慨呀感慨, 原來自古以來, 便有這趨勢, 以尚熱鬧, 把西曲放在中樂上演奏的喜好, 然後寥寥數人私下感慨”微音淡弄" 無人愛, 古意早渺茫.

Had a 15 minutes guqin demonstration along with several Confucius Institute Chinese musicians at Binghamton University Music 111 class this morning (3/9/2017 11:40am -1:05pm).



Thanks Jiawei sent me this precious photo of yesterday at Music 111, with instructor from China and the musicians from CI and two BU professors, Prof. Burns and Prof Webb.

日人林謙三說烏絲欄指法譜是由隋唐人所寫, 說荻生俎徠曾明書烏絲欄為唐恆武(781年)以前筆跡, 與幽蘭譜的筆跡年代一致. 可證兩者同為一物. 古譜都說制譜始於雍門周(戰國人約320BC), 到隋唐時的趙耶利(died in 639) 修正. 集字成譜. 然後才有曹柔做減字譜. 也有說唐陳拙作減字, 明的楊倫說有楊氏減字法應是指宋的楊祖雲的減字法. 可曹柔到底是哪個年代的人未考, 汪孟舒先生認為曹柔應該在唐陳拙之前.So the qin writing system of notation, probably has been existed even about 1000 years earlier than the Yolan manuscript. And the abbreviated notation system could be developed around Sui and Tang dynasty. In another word, the guqin literate notation has been using for more than 1000 years, then the abbreviated Chinese notation developed.

Quote some comments about Jiang Kui's poetry:
"感慨全在虛處,無跡可尋"
The most touching feeling are in the hidden parts where there is no trace to find. 
意愈切而詞愈微
The deeper the meaning, the subtle and profound the words are.
真情實感 愈淡愈深
Real emotion (and) true feeling
The more lighter (in surface) the more deeper (inside).
Here is one of his poetry, 鷓鴣天 (元夕有所夢) Lyrics to the Melody of a Partridge-filled Sky (I dream of something on the first night of a new year.)
肥水東流無盡期。當初不合種相思。夢中未比丹青見,暗裏忽驚山鳥啼。
春未綠,鬢先絲。人間別久不成悲。誰教歲歲紅蓮夜,兩處沉吟各自知。
The waters of River Fei eternally drains towards the east, 
Shouldn't have allowed such pining to ever begin. 
In dreams I behold you no better than I could in a painting of you, 
And in the dark there are cries of mountain birds that startle me.
Before spring turns everything green, my sideburns have become gray, 
Extended partings lead to growing insouciance dulling grief. 
Why must we see off with bright lanterns yet another New Year's eve, 
As we wistful remain and the distance between us keep?

People believe that Jiang Kui wrote many poetry, including this one, for his lover in Hefei, one of the two skillful musician sisters. One play pipa well and the other play zheng well. However, 鷓鴣天 Lyrics to the Melody of a Partridge-filled Sky, was written much later, about 20 years later, when Kui had apart from the sisters, and had married.

Kui didn't like to be in politician, and his life was mostly supported by friends. When the major supporter friend of him died, Kui's life was also impacted and when Kui died, he was very poor that his family cannot afford a funeral for him.

姜夔
小重山令·賦潭州紅梅
人繞湘皋月墜時。斜橫花樹小,浸愁漪。一春幽事有誰知?東風冷,香遠茜裙歸。
鷗去昔遊非。遙憐花可可,夢依依。九疑雲杳斷魂啼。相思血,都沁綠筠枝。

譯文
在湘江邊繞著江岸一直走下去,不覺月亮都快要落下來了。江畔的梅樹橫斜,小小的花枝開放,浸滿了憂愁的漣漪。梅花的一春幽愁之事有誰知道呢?寒冷的東風吹起。梅花也很快就要花落香消了。
鷗鳥離去,昔日之物已是物是人非。只能遠遠地憐惜那美麗動人的花朵和依依別夢。九嶷山雲霧杳杳,娥皇、女英斷魂哭泣,相思血淚浸透在綠竹枝上。

註釋
1.小重山令:即《小重山》,又名《小衝山》、《柳色新》。唐人常用此調寫宮女幽怨。 《詞譜》以薛昭蘊詞為正體。雙調五十八字。上下片各四句,四平韻。換頭句較上片起句少二字,其餘各句上下片均同。另有五十七字、六十字兩體,是變格。
2.潭州:今湖南長沙市。
3.湘:湘江,流經湖南。
4.皋:岸。
5.茜(qiàn)裙:絳紅色的裙子。指女子。
6.依依:依稀隱約的樣子。
7.九疑:山名。在湖南寧遠縣南。
8.斷魂啼:據任昉《述異記》,帝舜南巡,死於九疑並葬於此,其二妃娥皇、女英聞訊奔喪,痛哭於湘水之濱,傳說他們的眼淚染竹而成斑。後二人投湘水而死。
9.沁:滲透.
10.綠筠(yún):綠竹。

Lyrics to the Melody of Overlapping Hills - Poetry to endow with Tanzhou Red Plum Blossom (Tanzhou is today Changsha, Hunan Province)

I walked around the Xiang river bank when the moon is about going down.
The plum blossom trees are leaning with small flowers blooming,
Immerse in the ripples of sorrow.
Who will know the secluded things of the whole spring?
Cold eastern wind (blowing), fragrant (of the plum blossom) fading, red skirts falling (flowers return to the earth).
The gulls are gone, so do the old memories and companion.
I can only pity the delicate flowers in far distance
Dream dimly.
(the story of that) The mysterious cloud on Jiuyi mountain has the crying of broken souls (from emperor Shun's two wives when Shun died)
The blood of missing had soaked in green bamboo branches.
